Independent Theaters vs. Multiplexes

A multiplex is a bus station for images: many rooms, many clocks, a parking lot that could host a county fair. An independent theater is usually a few rooms with a point of view. Neither is morally superior. They solve different nights.

What multiplexes are for

Wide releases, premium formats, late shows, and the odds that something still plays at 10:20. If you searched “movies in theaters now” in a hurry, the highway box is often the inventory match. Start at movie theaters near you and do not be snobbish about convenience.

What independents are for

Holds on films the multiplex already dropped, repertory screenings, captions-forward programming, and lobbies that still feel like rooms. They may close earlier. They may not take every gift card. Call if the website looks like it was last hugged in 2019 — many still run excellent projection.

Showtimes and new movies

Independents sometimes get a title a week later, or keep it a week longer. Multiplexes throttle new movies based on Friday numbers. Always verify what is playing now at the specific door.
